Climate Change Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather related to changes in atmosphere for short period of time
Climate refers to average weather conditions over long period of time
What is climate change?
Climate change refers to long-term change in temp and weather patterns of region
What do greenhouse gases do?
Gases trap heat of Sun and reflect it back to atmosphere
Without the greenhouse effect, what would happen?
Without effect, Earth’s surface temp would become cooler by nearly 33C
What happens when there is a large amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and which process does it increase results in?
When there is large amount of CO2 more heat trapped and higher global temperature, increase results in enhanced greenhouse effect
What is ground-level ozone?
When pollutants react in atmosphere, produce ozone near surface of Earth called ground-level ozone, harmful for both plants and humans
Which layer is the warmest and why?
Troposphere is warmest layer because surface of Earth absorbs Sun’s rays and releases them as heat
Which layer contains ozone?
Second layer of Earth (stratosphere) contains layer of ozone
What does ozone absorb?
Ozone absorbs ultraviolet radiation from Sun
Which chemicals make the ozone layer thin?
CFCs
What are CFCs made of?
Chlorine, flourine and carbon
What is global warming?
Global warming refers to long-term increase of Earth’s overall temp
What is the effect of deforestation?
Deforestation has led to considerable spike in level of CO2 released into atmosphere
What are some main causes of climate change?
- Burning of fossil fuels
- Use of aerosol sprays
- Deforestation for construction or agriculture
- Chemical fertilisers
- Rise in global temp
- Rise of sea level
- Melting of ice sheets and glaciers
- Increase in chance of droughts and floods
