water supply Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is water?
Natural resource found on Earth in form of salty and fresh
What are the three sources of freshwater?
Ice and snow
Rivers and lakes
Groundwater
How much of Earth is covered by water?
71%
How much water do oceans hold?
97%
What is 20% of freshwater?
Groundwater
What is the falling of water from the sky?
Rain
What is snow?
Precipitation in the form of flakes
What is hail?
Big balls of ice that fall from the sky
What is sleet?
Small and semitransparent balls of ice
What is the water cycle?
movement of water from atmosphere to land and land to atmosphere
What does the water cycle start with?
Precipitation
What is surface runoff?
rain that falls to ground and flows along the ground
What is evaporation?
process where heat from Sun heats up water in river or sea
What is transpiration?
process where roots of plants absorb water in ground and transfer water to leaves which in turn release water as water vapour
What is condensation?
process when water droplets cool to form clouds
What are some reasons for higher demand of water?
Population growth
Agriculture
Industrialization
How much % of water is used in households?
7%
Why is water essential for agriculture?
It is essential for agriculture because more cultivation means more water is required
Why is water essential for industrialization?
Water is needed in power plants in factories for cooling of engines and machinery
What is reclamation of water?
Reclamation of water means that sewage water from household and industries can be purified to remove bacteria etc.
What is a water catchment area?
Water catchment area is area where all water, sediments and dissolved minerals drain into common outlet
What is desalination?
Desalination is removal of salt in seawater through distillation or membrane filtration
Distillation method
Distillation method is the method that requires a lot of energy to evaporate seawater
Membrane filtration method
Membrane filtration method requires less energy but cost still high for some countries
