Climate Change Flashcards
(21 cards)
What are the four spheres in the Earth?
Lithosphere - rocks, soil
Biosphere - every living thing
Hydrosphere - water
Atmosphere - gases above
Biotic meaning?
all living things in the ecosystem
Abiotic meaning?
non-living factors in the ecosystem
Ecology meaning?
branch of science that deals with the relationships between the organisms and their environment
Ecosystem meaning?
describes an environment and every living and non-living factor
What is the greenhouse gas effect?
Natural trapping of heat. It works by the sun shining sending light and heat to the Earth, then some of the heat is absorbed and some is reflected back into space.
What is the enhanced greenhouse gas effect?
human activities causing more heat to be trapped like the pollution from cars or factories
carbon sink
holds carbon
carbon sequestration
storing carbon
carbon capture
capture CO2 from burning fossil fuels
weather
short-term conditions of area
climate
long-term averages of area’s weather
global warming
gradual increase in average global temperature
climate change meaning?
long-term change in the average weather patterns
Strategies to reduce greenhouse gases as an individual?
Reduce energy consumption like turning off lights, conserve water like taking shorter showers, reduce meat consumption, walk or bike, use energy efficient appliances
What are some human behaviours to reduce climate change?
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Insulate homes
Use public transport
What are some greenhouse gases?
methane (CH4)
water vapour (H2O)
carbon dioxide (CO2)
nitrous oxide (N2O)
ozone (O3)
Certain gases in the atmosphere act like the glass walls. True or False?
True
Greenhouse gases reflect?
long-wave radiation
What does the greenhouse effect do?
maintains a comfortable tempreture
What does the enhanced greenhouse effect do?
heats the planet more every year
