Nervous System Flashcards
(30 cards)
What are the two parts of the nervous system?
CNS (central nervous system) and PNS (peripheral nervous system)
What is the CNS made up of?
brain and spinal cord
What is the PNS made up of?
nerves that carry messages to/from CNS
What are the major parts of a neuron?
cell body, dendrites, axon, myelin sheath and axon terminals
What are sensory neurons?
send sensory information to the CNS for processing
What are motor neurons?
send messages to the muscles or glands to make them work/move
What are inter neurons?
often connect motor and sensory neurons
What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary responses?
Voluntary: done consciously
Involuntary: done unconsciously
What is stimulus?
A change in or around your body that your body notices and reacts to
Order of how the nervous system works?
1️⃣ Recognises
2️⃣ Sends messages
3️⃣ Processes messages
4️⃣ Responds
How many major lobes are there in the brain?
6
What are the six major lobes?
Frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, limbic and insular
What is the function of the frontal lobe?
Thinking and planning
What is the function of the Parietal lobe?
sensation, spatial aware
Temporal lobe function
hearing and memory
Occipital lobe function
vision
Limbic lobe function
emotions and motivation
Insulator lobe function
taste and conscious
What is synapses?
A junction with a gap that separates two neuron
What is the stimulus response?
It describes how a system reacts to a stimulus, it triggers a response
Cerebellium
balance and coordination
Brainstem
swallow, breath, heart rate, blood flow
Difference between left and right side of the brain?
Left more academic, right more creative
Hypothalamus
control centre in brain
