Q

old tiger / James Klinge

A

This wall was once the location on an intricately detailed tiger mural, which was a collaboration between James Klinge and Art Pistol and was a recreation of an original tiger lucky eight design that was once found here.
- unfortunately the mural was defaced by graffiti and was scrubbed off, leaving a black wall - or to some, a blank canvas

Q

Legal Graffiti wall

A

though this wall is not a legal graffiti wall, graffiti is tolerated in this space and petitions have popped up asking the council to designate the wall as a legal space to paint.
- a legal graffiti wall would create a safe space for young and not so young artists to practise graffiti without fear of reprisal. BY providing a space for people to tag freely, it lowers instances of illegal tagging on public and private property
benefits of a legal graffiti wall include:
- flourishing arts culture (graffiti is often seen by artists, musicians and writers as a sign that the city supports an underground or youth culture)
- revitalisation of neglected areas
- minority groups can participate (illicit activities often have to be undertaken at night to avoid law enforcement - meaning women and minority groups are often excluded from this form of creative expression)
- In Glasgow, SWG3 is turning over wall space to people it think’s requires a means of expression. Garry Mackay or Gazmac says “its time Glasgow caught up with other cities such as London and Bristol in providing legal wall space”
- the wall we are at is updated and altered regularly. One of the rules of graffiti is that there are no rules! covering up other people’s artwork is allowed, though its courteous to cover it completely so you are not passing it off as your own.
