CNS Flashcards
(18 cards)
Main function of the CNS
processes and decides what to do with the information from the rest of the body
CNS: 3 levels of protection
bones (cranium/vertebrae)
meninges
cerebrospinal fluid
Main function of the spinal cord
Connects the PNS to the brain
Spinal Nerves
there are 31 pairs of spinal nerves
each nerve consists of sensory afferent and motor efferent neurons
Which arteries supply blood to the brain
Internal Carotid, Vertebral
Where do arteries form the basilar artery
Ventral Surface of the Hindbrain
Where does the basilar artery divide and what arteries does it form?
It divides near the front of the pons to form the two posterior cerebral arteries.
What does the internal carotid artery form
Anterior and middle cerebral arteries
Where is the diencephalon
Both sides of the 3rd ventricle
Diencephalon
A nuclear complex made of the thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus, ventral thalamus and dorsal thalamus
Thalamus
Comman center of the brain
The 3 main parts of the brain
Brain Stem, Cerebrum, Cerebellum
Brainstem
Controls involuntary body functions
Cerebellum
Movement, coordination, balance
Cerebral cortex
Outer layer of grey matter
comprised of the occipital, frontal, parietal and temporal lobes
Cerebrum
Made of the cerebral cortex (grey matter), white matter, and basal ganglia
Amygdala
Emotional processing
Basal ganglia
Motor control, forming habits
