Senses Flashcards
(14 cards)
What do all sensory systems have to do?
Convert the physical energy of a stimulus into a biological response
Where do action potentials occur?
Nerve fibres
How is the eye specialized to tell us the features of visual objects?
Through the detection of electromagnetic radiation emanating from visual objects
What are the 2 components to all senses
Peripheral and central sensory components
What do peripheral components do with physical energy?
Convert stimulus into a biological response
What are the 3 types of sensory structures
accessory structures, receptor cells, output neurones
Accessory structures do what?
Translate stimulus energy to receptor cells
Receptor cells do what?
Transduce generator potential as a biological response
Output neurones do what?
Transmit information to the CNS (in the form of action potentials)
Transduction is
the process of making a biological response
What is the type of biological responses
Electrical
Why does the receptor potential produce/modulate a train of action potentials?
To transmit info to the brain
What sensory systems do NOT have a separate receptor cells
Skin and Smell
What is the specific stimulus information that a train of action potentials can carry?
Constancy, Texture, Intensity
