CNS TUMORS Flashcards
(30 cards)
Primary intracerebral tumors originate from
Brain substance, neuroglia, neurons, cells of the blood vessels, and connective tissue.
Primary extra cerebral tumors originate outside the substance of the
Brain
Primary extra cerebral tumors include
Meningiomas, acoustic nerve tumors, and tumors of the pituitary and penial glands
Can’t be found inside or outside the brain substance
Metastatic or secondary tumors
CNS tumors include tumors of the
Brain and spinal cord
The second most common group of tumors in children
CNS tumors
Clinical manifestations of cerebral tumors
effects are varied: can include seizures, visual disturbances, unstable gait, and cranial nerve dysfunction
An obstruction of the ventricle system or hemorrhage occurring around the tumor can result in
Increased ICP
This type of tumor does not metastasize because there is no lymphatic channels
Intercranial brain tumors
If metastasis occurs from an intracranial brain tumor it is usually due to
Seeding of cerebral blood through CSF, during cranial surgery, or through artificial shunts.
Comprise 50% to 60% of all adult brain tumors and include astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, mixed oligodendrogliomas, ependymomas, and immunohistologic. Characteristics
Primary brain tumors (Intracerebral)also called gliomas
How many grades does the WHO divide Gliomas into
4
WHO a grade one
Pilocytic astrocytoma
WHO grade 2 also classified as low-grade glioma
oligodendrogliomas
Grade diffuse astrocytoma
WHO grade II
The most common primary CNS tumor comprises 50% of all brain and spinal cord tumors
Astrocytoma
One third of astrocytomas are classified at diagnosis as grades
Grade one or grade 2
Astrocytomas are located most commonly in the
Cerebrum, hypothalamus, or pons
Clinical manifestations of astrocytoma
Headache and subtle neurobehavioral changes or an early symptom
50% experience a focal or generalized seizure.
Increased ICP is usually a late clinical manifestation
Comprises 2% of all brain tumors and 10% to 15% of all gliomas
oligodendrogliomas
Slow growing well differentiated tumors, often with cysts and calcifications present
oligodendrogliomas
More than 50% of individuals experience of focal or generalized seizure as the first clinical manifestation. Also 50% experience increased ICP at the time of diagnosis.
Patients with a oligodendrogliomas tumor.
Glioma that arises from the ependymal cells that form the walls of the ventricles and grow either into the ventricle or into adjacent brain tissue: they are not encapsulated.
ependymoma
They compromise 6% of all primary brain tumors in adults and 10% and children and adolescents.
