co transport of amino acids and monosaccharides Flashcards
(8 cards)
When does co-transport need to happen?
When the concentration of monosaccharides or amino acids increases above that in the lumen.
What is the first step of co-transport?
Sodium ions are actively transported out of epithelial cells and into the blood.
What does co-transport require?
Carrier protein and ATP
What does co-transport ensure?
That there is a low concentration of sodium ions in the epithelial cell
What does this mean for the concentration of sodium ions in the lumen?
There is a higher concentration in the lumen
What has been created for sodium ions?
A concentration gradient
What will happen to the sodium ions in the lumen?
They will diffuse into the epithelial cell through a carrier protein called a co-transport protein, glucose will move through these proteins with the sodium ions
What is the final step of co-transport?
The glucose molecules will move out the cell into a capillary through facilitated diffusion through a channel or carrier protein
