- stretches of the Atlantic-facing coast, where the waves are more powerful for much of the year (Cornwall or NW Scotland)
-Where the rate of erosion is greater than the rate of deposition
-Erosion landforms, e.g. headlands, cliffs, wave cut platforms

- Stretches the coast where the waves are less powerful
