Erosional Landforms Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
Cliffs and wave-cut platforms
A
- Erosion happens at the base, which creates a wave-cut notch, which causes the cliff to become unstable and collapse (retreats inland)
-Which then leaves behind a wave-cut platform, a flat, exposed rock area at the base of the cliff
2
Q
Headlands and Bays
A
-Formes on discordant coastlines (alternating bands of hard and soft rock)
-Soft rock erodes faster, causing bays to form
-Hard rock resists erosion, which causes headlands
3
Q
Caves, Arches, Stacks and stumps
A
-Form on headlands due to marine erosion exploting creaks and weaknesses.
1) Cave erosion enlarges a crack
2) Arch Cave deepened and broke through the headland
3) The stack roof collapses, leaving an isolated pillar
4) Stump Stack erodes and collapses, leaving a low stump
Example- Old Harry Rock, Dorset
4
Q
Geos and Blowholes
A
- Geo- A narrow, steep-sided inlet formed when a cave collapses along a joint or fault
-Blowhole- Forms when a cave grows upward and breaks through to the cliff top
