Q

Research on coding-Baddeley
4 groups of p-list of words

A

Baddeley-gave 4 groups of p different list of words to remember
Group 1-(acoustically similar)
Group 2-(acoustically dissimilar)
Group 3 ( semantically similar) words
Group 4( Semantically dissimilar)
>p asked to recall words in same order, all recalling from STM
>did worse with acoustically similar
>when recalled aftertime interval- 20m recalled from LTM
>did worse with semantically similar
>Findings suggest info is coded acoustically in STM& semantically in LTM

Coding- Seperate memory stores

Strength

A

strength-Baddeley’s study identified a clear difference between 2 memory stores
Th idea that STM uses mostly acoustic coding & LTM uses semantic significant
Important step in understanding memory system which led to the multi store model

Coding- Artificial stimuli

Limitation

A

Artificial stimuli
>Baddeley’s study used artificial stimuli rather than meaningful material

e.g the word lists had no personal meaning to p
> so Baddeley’s findings may dont tell us about coding in diff memory tasks

> when processing more meaningful info ppl may use semantic coding even for STM tasks

Suggests findings from this study have limited application.
