Piagets Theory of cognitive development
-enthonocentric, most children were Caucasian. Daren 2017 said cultural relativism should be applied to cognitive development and not assume a universal approach.
+Howe et al 1992, children aged 9-12 in groups of 4, study movement of objects down Slope, found they all enhanced knowledge but not all in the same way.
+education improved. Don’t sit in silent rows copying from board, replaced by activity orientated tasks eg properties of sand and water.
-Overestimate how intellectually curious children are. He studied children from white, middle class families. Poorer, due to less educational opportunities, may be less motivated.
Piagets stages of intellectual development (object permanence)
-child may have lacked understanding of the blanket situation, Mahler and Dupoux 1994, child lost interest or doesn’t have enough physical coordination
-Bower and wishart 1972 infant becomes distracted. If lights weren’t on 1-4 months continued to reach for it.
-relys on motor development they don’t have
-each child had 3 mins to complete task, could have been chance
Piagets stages of Intellectual development (egocentrism)
-lack mundane realism, lack of understanding in what the task was asking
-Hughes 1975. When playing hide and seek 90% of children aged 3-5 could hide a 3D doll so other doll couldn’t see it.
-Gelman 1979 found 4 year olds adjust speech when talking to 2 year olds. May be decentered earlier than thought.
Piagets stages of intellectual development (conservation)
+Piaget 1960 used two rows of coins. Preoperational thought amount grew as spacing did.
-Mcgarrigle and Donaldson 1974 found 72% of 4-6 yr olds could conserve if a naughty teddy moved coins.
-Rose and Blank 1974 question being ask twice hinted that it was wrong . Repeated again and asked only once. Amount increased.
