Dates of each Conference (in order)
Tehran 1943, Yalta 1945,Potsdam 1945
Tehran decisions
Stalin declared war on Japan. Poland to be given German land. No tension between US and USSR
Yalta decisions (2) and disagreement
Germany to be split in 4 (France, UK, US and USSR). UN set up. Stalin wants to control Ukraine Belarus and Poland but UK stands for a free Poland. Still no major US -USSR tension
Potsdam decisions
Germany split organised. Berlin to be split in 4. Re-establish German democracy. Nazi party banned. Allow Germany in UN. Stalin wants great reparations for 20million dead men but UK and US refuse. Tension starting to heat between US-USSR.
Iron curtain speech
Winston Churchill , now not the PM, gave this speech in 1946
• Churchill mentions increasing control from
Moscow. This implies that Stalin wants to control Europe.
• The use of the term ‘iron curtain’ implies that Stalin wants to create division between communist and capitalist Europe
• The speech implies that Stalin is a threat to much of Europe, not just Britain.
• He wanted US support to help prevent communism spreading further
Comecon
In 1949 and encouraged economic development of Eastern Europe (Stalin’s answer to the Marshall Plan)
Cominform
Aimed to control Communist Parties and ensure loyalty of Eastern European governments also
Removed ‘disloyal’ government members. 1947.
Truman Doctrine
Truman openly spoke of containing Communism. This ended the Grand Alliance and a big step away from isolationism.
Marshall plan
US would give away 13bn to help Europe get back on its feet this would also strengthen the US economy down the line whilst making Communism look bad.
