Religious settlement. The reason it became a thing. Brief explanation of all three aspects. The year.
What did it aim to do for Catholics. What was her overall aim.
The religious settlement was required as religion was strongly dividing England and the North was very much a Catholic stronghold. Act of Supremecy was where Elizabeth became supreme governor of the church. Act of Uniformity where all churches and services to be the same across the country. Royal Injunctions were instructions to reinforce the two main Acts. 1559. It aimed to appease Catholics by finding a compromise that would establish a form of Protestantism that Catholics could accept. She didn’t want to persecute Catholics but she was hoping that their religion would die out in England eventually.
Reaction and to the Elizabethan religious settlement from protestants.
Puritans (extreme Protestants) disapproved of the use of the crucifix and priests wearing special vestments. Elizabeth had to back down about the crucifix but managed to insist that the vestments were worn
Challenge to the religious settlement from the Catholics
In 1566 the pope issued an instruction for Catholics not to attend church services. North of England became an issue for Elizabeth where there was a revolt in 1569.

Elizabeth refused Philip ll marriage proposal when she came to the throne. Philip was himself as the leading Catholic Monarch. He didn’t like Elizabeths support for Protestantism (including the Dutch rebels) and harsh treatment of the Catholics. Many English merchants directly challenged Spain’s dominance of the new world and even attacked Spanish ships and port (Francis Drake being the most famous of them). The treaty of Joinville (1584) between Spain and France. Eliz retaliated with the treay of Nonsuch (1585) in support of the rebels. ‘Singeing the King of Spain’s beard’. In 1587 Drake sailed into Cadiz Harbour and destroyed 30 Spanish ships and a large amount of their supplies which gave Emgland more time to prepare for the eventual conflict with Spain.
Reasons for high levels of poverty (5)
• Increased population
• Rising food prices
• Sheep farming and enclosure of fields meant less people were employed in farms
• More people forced to move to cities to look for work
• International problems such as Dutch Revolt affected trade
Babington plot year ,plan and what failed
Duke of Guise invaded with the Catholics determined overthrow Elizabeth and put Mary on the Throne. Walsingham (Secretary of State) intercepted the letters in the Babington Plot and deciphered the codes within them and knew what was coming. 1986
Reasons to execute Mary Queen of Scots (3)
• Act for the Preservation of the Queen’s
Safety barred Mary from the succession and allowed for her to be put on trial
• Walsingham had provided clear evidence from the Babington Plot that she was involved in plotting against Elizabeth
• Rumours of an imminent attack from Spain reinforced the threat that Mary
posed.
