black
what colour is Copper carbonate CuCO3?
green
what colour is Copper metal ?
orange/brown
what colour is sulfur?
yellow
what colour are all the other salts?
white
what is the Flame test colour Lithium ions (Li+) ?
red/crimson flame
what is the Flame test colour copper (II) ions (Cu2+) ?
blue/green flame
what is the Flame test colour potassium ions (K+) ?
lilac flame
what is the Flame test colour calcium ions (Ca2+) ?
orange/red flame
what is the Flame test colour sodium ions (Na+) ?
yellow
what is the Flame colour when sulfur burns ?
blue flame
what is the Flame colour when magnesium burns ?
bright white flame
what is the colour change for Heating copper carbonate to form copper oxide (thermal decomposition) ?
Green to black
what is the colour change for Reducing copper oxide with methane/hydrogen ?
Black to pink/orange
what is the colour change for Adding chlorine water to potassium iodide ?
Colourless to red/brown
what is the colour change for Adding chlorine water to potassium bromide ?
Colourless to orange
what is the colour change for Adding bromine water to potassium iodide ?
colourless to red/brown
what is the chemical test for carbonates?
add dilute HCl - to remove any impurities
if carbonates are present then CO2 will be released
test for CO2 by bubbling it through limewater(cloudy = carbonates present)
how do you carry out the chemical test for halides? and what are the positive results?
add nitric acid (HNO3)
then add silver nitrate(AgNO3)
if chloride ions are present then a white precipitate will form
if bromide ions are present then a cream precipitate will form
if iodide ions are present then a yellow precipitate will form
what is the chemical test for sulfates?
add HCL and then barium chloride to the solution
if sulfates are present, a white precipitate will form
how do you test for the presence ofIron (II)??
add sodium hydroxide to solution and if a sludgy green precipitate forms then iron(II) is present
how do you test for the presence ofIron (III)??
add sodium hydroxide to solution and if a orange/brown precipitate forms then iron(III) is present
how do you test for the presence ofcopper (II)??
add sodium hydroxide to solution and if a blue precipitate forms then copper (II) is present
