Sustainability

A
  • Sustainability of natural environment.
  • Any efforts to improve health should ensure preservation of natural environment and strengthening of sustainable technologies and processes.
  • Sustainable communities use resources to meet current needs and ensure there are adequate resources for future generations.
  • City of Joondalup has developed a Bike Plan 2016 – 2021 which aims to make bike riding a part of everyday life. City promotes, celebrates and supports bike riding so carbon emissions can be minimised.
  • Curitiba has a bus rapid transit system. Roads with express lanes for triple articulated buses, designed for quick boarding and cheap ticket prices. Can now maintain a quick, cheap and low-emission transit system. City has allocated streets for pedestrians only and bike lanes to reduce use of cars.

Diversity

A
  • Acknowledges that there is more than one right method for community development and a variety of responses should be encouraged.
  • Encourages communities to define and solve their own problems, using strategies and methods as determined by them. Not seeking to impose one world view or ‘right’ structure.
  • COJ has two beach wheelchairs that can be hired to provide beach access for children and adults with a disability. Chairs are easily pushed over sand to water’s edge. Wheelchairs are located at Mullaloo Beach and Hillary’s Beach and are free to use. City also has disability access areas, and a mat enabling people in wheelchairs to get from sand to water’s edge at Hillary’s Beach. This mat allows anyone with difficulty navigating sand to reach water.
  • Curitiba has a very diverse population. A mix of Portuguese, Spanish, German, Polish, Italian, Japanese citizens.

  • Joondalup Wanneroo Ending Homelessness Group - City of Joondalup and Wanneroo are founding members of JWEG. Leading organisation is red cross. Members meet every six weeks to share information, collaborate and serve community to end homelessness in northern corridor. Purpose is to reinforce reginal homeless plan.

Human rights

  • Refers to most basic rights & freedoms that humans are entitled to. Include peace, shelter, education, good income and stable Eco-system, sustainable resources & social justice and equity.

  • Spier’s centre - 40 years delivering community services including place-based activities, Financial Counselling, Financial Capability and Emergency Relief services to build financial resilience and provide support. Deliver community-led programs and specialist services about building resilience and connectedness in communities.
  • In Curitiba, Municipal Housing Fund provides financial support since 1990 towards housing for lower income populations. City’s public housing program bought few remaining large plots of land, as a home for 50,000 families.

Adressing disadvantage

  • Refers to those experiencing inequities in life. May relate to personal facts such as age and race or structural inequity such as access to health, education, housing or geographical isolation.

  • Headspace - Joondalup free recourse centre as well as online and telephone service for young people aged 12 – 25 years with any health and wellbeing concerns. Centres services are free and support mental health (clinical health professionals provide treatment and management plans for a variety of mental health concerns), physical and sexual health (on-site), work and study (counsellors assist with stress, preparing job applications and career planning).
  • In Curitiba ‘green exchange” employment program focuses on benefiting both those in need and environment. Low-income families living in shanty towns cannot be reached by bin lorries, so they bring trash bags to neighbourhood centres in exchange for bus tickets and food. Creates less city litter and less disease, less garbage dumped in sensitive areas such as rivers (less water pollution).

Valuing local knowledge, culture, skills, resources

A
  • Local people know their community and surroundings best and are likely to have most detailed knowledge of local conditions and potential opportunities for change, as opposed to engaging an outside consultant or ‘expert’.
  • Using their skills will reduce costs, decrease planning and set up time and increase chance of sustainability of programs.

  • NAIDOC day celebrations - In response to 2020 NAIDOC theme, City of Joondalup have commissioned Whadjuk Noongar Yorga woman, Casey Kickett to develop walking tours of Lake Goollelal. Tour takes a deep look at the lake including area prior to colonisation. Tour explores Noongar knowledge and contextual issues with the lake and surrounding land.
  • Curitiba Holocaust Museum - Dark past of WW2 has been put on display in Curitiba due to large Jewish migrant population, to help educate younger generations and visitors on most horrific times in human history.

Community partnerships

A

Woolworths and foodbank community partnership

National partnership which assists in preventing food waste and lessening impact of food insecurity for those at risk.

Woolworths donates any excess food product to Foodbank who, through distribution centers and breakfast programs, provide low-cost/free nutritious food products to those who need them most.

This partnership benefits individual well-being as it lessens impacts of food insecurity for most vulnerable population groups.
