Components of Infectious Diseases Flashcards
(26 cards)
Pathogen
- Disease-causing microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites).
Reservoir
- Natural habitat of the pathogen (humans, animals, environment).
Portal of Entry
- Routes pathogens enter the host: respiratory tract, GI tract, genitourinary tract, skin breaks.
Susceptible Host
- Vulnerable individuals due to age, immune status, genetics, or health conditions.
Transmission
- The process by which the pathogen is transferred from the reservoir or infected host to a susceptible host
- Modes: direct contact, indirect contact, airborne, vector-borne, food/waterborne.
Colonization
- Pathogen establishes and multiplies in the host.
Invasion
- Pathogen spreads from initial site to other tissues/organs.
Multiplication
- Pathogen replicates, increasing load and causing damage.
Host Response
- Immune system activates to eliminate the pathogen (antibodies, immune cells).
Disease Manifestation
- Clinical symptoms (mild to severe) based on pathogen virulence and host factors.
Chain of Infection

Portal of Entry
Susceptible Host
Infectious Agent
- Pathogen capable of causing disease.
Portal of Exit
- Route pathogen leaves the reservoir (e.g., respiratory secretions, feces).
Mode of Transmission
- Direct/indirect contact, airborne, vector-borne, food/waterborne.
Reservoir
- Source where the pathogen lives and multiplies.
Susceptible Host
- Vulnerable individual lacking immunity.
Portal of Entry
- Route pathogen enters the host.
Prevention
- Break any link (vaccination, hygiene, sanitation).
Infectious Disease Spectrum
Asymptomatic Infection
Subclinical Infection
Mild/Moderate Illness
Severe Illness
Chronic Infection
Latent Infection
Fatal Outcome
Subclinical Infection
Individual experience mild or Non-specific symptoms that may go unnoticed or be attributed to other causes
Asymptomatic Infection
Individuals infected with pathogen but show no noticeable symptoms. They can still transmit infection to others
Mild/Moderate Illness
Symptoms vary depending on the pathogen involved but may include; fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, muscle aches gastrointestinal symptoms and respiratory symptoms
Severe Illness
Some infectious disease can cause severe illness that requires hospitalization and may lead to death e.g sepsis, ARDS(acute respiratory distress syndrome)
Fatal Outcome
Infectious diseases can be severe and cause death. Severity and fatal outcome of disease vary depending on the pathoge host factors
