- 300,000 killed using mobile vans
- first camp established as a death camp in Dec 1941
- only 10 survived, 2 were interviewed by Lanzmann in Shoah

- 600,000 killed
- First experiments in 1940/41
- First gas chambers in 1942, killed 15,000/day
- 2 people survived
- described as "the laboratory"

- German occupied Poland
- 870,000 killed between 1942-43
- mainly polish Jews
- used carbon monoxide gas
- no crematoria --> bodies burned in pits
- built 10 new gas chambers to accommodate thousands of gassings per day
- camp burned, plowed & turned into a farm in August 1943
- "primitive but efficient production line of death"

- Lubin, Poland
- 360,000 killed
- Disguised gas showers introduced in 1941/42

- Poland, 37 miles west of Krakow
- 1.1M killed
- used Zyklon B gas
- "the factory" of mass death
- biggest concentration/death camp

- outside of Lubin, Poland
- 250,000 killed between 1942-1955
- liberated by Soviets in 1944

goals of Auschwitz-Birkenau

- to incarcerate real and perceived enemies of the Nazi regime and the German occupation authorities in Poland for an indefinite period of time
- to provide a supply of forced laborers for deployment in SS-owned construction related enterprises
- to serve as a site to kill small, targeted groups of the population whose death was determined by the SS and police authorities to be essential to the security of Nazi Germany
