Concepts of Hazards Flashcards

1
Q

1) What is a hazard?

2) Why do people put themselves at risk in relation to Hazards

A

1) Event that threatens both life and property

2) as events are unpredictable, lack of alternatives, cost/benefit e.g. LA have high risk but great access to natural resources (Oil)

Q

What are the main perceptions of natural hazards?

A
  • Fatalism – losses are accepted as a part of life and are inevitable so cause people to stay where they are
  • Adaption – in HDEs people believe they can predict, prepare and therefore protect themselves from natural hazards
  • Fear – no longer feel safe so move away

Q

What is the main management strategies of Hazards?

A
  • Prediction – using monitoring to give predictions mostly from satellites
  • Prevention – unrealistic but attempts have been made like cloud seeding to cause for precipitation
  • Protection – sea walls, earthquake proof building, dynamite to divert lava flows on Mt Etna
