Concepts of Hazards Flashcards
1
Q
1) What is a hazard?
2) Why do people put themselves at risk in relation to Hazards
A
1) Event that threatens both life and property
2) as events are unpredictable, lack of alternatives, cost/benefit e.g. LA have high risk but great access to natural resources (Oil)
2
Q
What are the main perceptions of natural hazards?
A
- Fatalism – losses are accepted as a part of life and are inevitable so cause people to stay where they are
- Adaption – in HDEs people believe they can predict, prepare and therefore protect themselves from natural hazards
- Fear – no longer feel safe so move away
3
Q
What is the main management strategies of Hazards?
A
- Prediction – using monitoring to give predictions mostly from satellites
- Prevention – unrealistic but attempts have been made like cloud seeding to cause for precipitation
- Protection – sea walls, earthquake proof building, dynamite to divert lava flows on Mt Etna
4
Q
1) What is distribution?
2) What is frequency
A
1) spatial coverage of a hazard
2) distribution of a hazard though time
