whats the difference between condensation and addition polymers
addition only forms the polymer and is made from one type of monomer, while condensation also produce water and are made from two types of monomers
when are condensation polymers formed
when two different monomers are linked together with the removal of a small molecule (usually water)
what monomers are used to make a polyester?
dicarboxylic acid and diol
carboxylic acid has
COOH group at both ends
diol has
OH group at both ends
what happens during the reaction
the COOH group from the acid reacts with the OH group from th alcohol ehich forms an ester linkage and produces water
how can polyesters be broken down
by hydrolisis (adding water)
biopolyesters
specific polyesters which are synthesised fom sugar and plant oils using microorganisms
what do biopolysters do
biodegrade naturally
