1
Q

This is an inflammation of the plantar fascia usually resulting in pain at the heel. The pain is usually more severe in the morning or when you first get up and put pressure on the foot or when there is prolonged standing or walking on the foot. The condition often occurs in runners (or other athletes who run a great deal) and in cases of rapid weight gain.

A

Plantar Fasciitis

2
Q

What is treatment for plantar fasciitis?

A
Rest
Ice
Stretching the gastrocnemius and soleus
Massage
Orthotics
3
Q

A condition that results from impingement of the median nerve, and may create sensory symptoms on the anterior side of the thumb, index finger, middle and radial 1/2 of the ring finger, as well as the posterior fingertips of the same fingers; motor symptoms may be weakness of the intrinsic muscles of the thumb.

A

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

4
Q

This is located between the arch-like concavity of the carpal bones and the transverse carpal ligament it provides safe passage for the median nerve and distal tendons of the extrinsic finger flexor muscles of the forearm to enter the hand.

A

Carpal Tunnel

5
Q

What mimics carpal tunnel syndrome?

A

Pronator teres syndrome

6
Q

Tightness, inflammation and/or strain in the pronator teres impinges on the medial nerve sending pain into the wrist mimicking carpal tunnel syndrome.

A

Pronator Teres Syndrome

7
Q

A thick band of fascia on the lateral aspect of the thigh running from the ASIS to the lateral condyle of the tibia. Because it crosses the knee joint tightness in the muscles attatching to it can cause it to pull resulting in mal-tracking of the patella or a rubbing of the IT band against the head of the fibula.

A

IT Band Friction Syndrome

8
Q

Yoga poses to avoid while pregnant.

A

Anything that puts pressure on the abdomen. Deep twists. Lying flat on the back in later pregnancy.

9
Q

Things to avoid with plantar fasciitis.

A

Over pronating and over supinating the ankles can lead to more damage. Try to align your knees and ankle in a neutral position.

10
Q

Yoga poses to avoid with herniated or bulging discs.

A

Positions that round the back, involve a forward bend, or cause numbness, tingling, or pain. Childs pose, sages pose, standing forward bend, head to knee pose, wide angle pose, and big toe pose.

11
Q

Modifications for people with carpal tunnel.

A

Spread your fingers while performing moves, prop your palms to reduce the angle between the forearm and the wrists. This will take pressure off the wrists. Make fists instead of putting palms flat, like in table top position. Rest on your forearm in certain poses rather than your hand.

12
Q

Yoga poses to avoid while having knee injuries. What are some of the best poses to use with knee injuries.?

A

Poses that puts strong flexion or pressure on the knees, such as childs pose, eagle pose, dancers pose, , or lotus pose. Modify by loosening the flexion of the knee, such as putting a blanket between the calves and buttocks in childs pose or sitting loosely crosslegged in lotus pose. Some poses that help the knees are chair pose, downward dog, and mountain pose.

13
Q

Yoga poses to avoid with shoulder injuries.

A

Poses that are harder on the shoulders and wrists, such as downward facing dog and plank pose variations.

14
Q

Yoga poses to avoid with hip injuries or hip replacements. What are the best poses for hip injuries.

A

Avoid standing or weight bearing poses, and practice poses on or chair or lying on your back. Progress to weight bearing poses slowly. Practice poses that keep hips neutral during poses, and avoid or modify ones that have extreme hip variations.

15
Q

What is contraindicated for a person with IT band friction syndrome and what helps to alleviate it.

A

Foam rolling can be painful and can further agitate IT band friction. It is better to use ball therapy to roll out your gluteus maximus and tensor fasciae latae. Then roll the balls on the outside of your thigh. Use a plow motion, by rolling the balls in a super slow motion. Wide legged forward bend, side plank, and side reclining leg lift can help loosen tight IT bands.

16
Q

How do you use yoga for arthritus?

A

Iyengar, Hatha, and Restorative yoga are very benificial for arthritus patients. Bikram, Vinyasa, and Power yoga do not allow time for transition or to alter poses for the wrists and ankles leading to pain or injury. Modifications can be to do vinyasa yoga with a chair. Yin yoga also can too much pressure on the joints and should be avoided with arthritus.
