what elements make up good communication skills?
Verbal
How you speak – Do you speak clearly, so people hear and understand what you’re saying? If refereeing players from the deaf community, have a bright coloured bib or flag which can be raised at the same time that you blow your whistle.
Your tone of voice – Do you adopt a tone that is appropriate for different situations (smiling, being authoritative, speaking calmly, raising your voice when necessary)?
Listening
Listen carefully when people speak to you, taking in what they say and not interrupting them.
Body language
Your facial expressions, the way you stand and how close you are to people are all forms of communication, some of which can be very negative if they become aggressive. Use visual representations, such as simulating a throw-in, to support deaf players.
