Definition of Conflict?
When 2 or more parties have differing opinion or attitudes towards something or someone. There can be many sources of conflict between stakeholders throughout lifecycle of project.
What are sources of conflict during Concept phase?
- Securing funding, business case approval, project support
- Balancing stakeholder influences and agreeing scope
What are sources of conflict during Definition phase?
- Alignment of scope to project budgets/priorities
- Agreeing resource plan and securing resource for project
- Establishing various components of PMP
What are sources of conflict during Deployment phase?
- Maintaining resource availability and commitment
- Deadlines not being met or progress not as expected
- Agreed plan, processes/methods not being followed
What are sources of conflict during Transition phase?
- Acceptance criteria not met
- End user expectations not achieved
What are sources of conflict during Adoption phase?
- Outputs not adopted as intended by BaU
What are sources of conflict during Benefits realisation phase?
- Agreement of measurement of realisation
How can conflict positively influence project?
- Allows open conversations for discussion
- Allowing expression of feelings/agendas
- Enables clarity of direction
I.e. do not ignore conflict
What are Thomas Kilman Modes of conflict?
- Compete (I win, you lose)
- Avoid (I lose, you lose)
- Compromise (we both half win and half lose)
- Collaborate (I win, you win)
- Accomodate (I lose, you win)
What are the x and y axis in the Thomas Kilman modes of conflict?
Desire to meet the needs of others (cooperation) vs desire to meet personal needs (assertiveness)
What are factors/methods to resolving conflict?
- Anticipate future conflicts
- Don’t ignore conflict
- Think about a resolution
- Encourage discussions
- Be facilitator
- Keep conversations neutral
