Appropriates Bill Rider 1871
NEGATIVE political, social and economic
The US gov cease to treat Plains Indians as an independent nation, tribe or power.
Ceased treaty making, instead land is just taken.
Dawes Act 1887
BAD. Social/economic/political
Dawes Act authorised the President of the US to survey tribal land belonging to the Native Americans and divide and alot small portions to individuals. Those who accept the allocations and lived distinctly away from tribes for 25 years get the land and citizenship
Burke Act 1906
BAD.
Amended the Dawes Act to say the land from the Dawes Act became taxable. This is detrimental to already struggling Natives.
Bursum Bill 1922
Bad. Economic.
Threatened to take land away from Peublo Indians.
Indian Citizenship Act 1924
Good and bad, social/political
Gave citizenship to all NAs born in the USA. But it’s just another form of assimilation and NAs don’t want citizenship
The Leavitt Bill (Dance Order) 1926
Bad social
Would have outlawed Pueblo Indians from performing their traditional dances.
The Meriam Report 1928
Good in all ways.
Condemned allotment policy and showed how badly it affected Native Americans on reservations, terrible living conditions etc.
Wheeler-Howard Act (Indian Reorganisation Act) 1934
Good all ways
Aimed to reverse the traditional goal of assimilation of Indians and instead to strengthen, perpetuate tribes and their historic traditions. Recognised and aimed to protect and enhance self-governance, culture and economic welfare.
Termination Act 1953
Bad
Terminated indian special status and forced them to move to the inner cities. It was deemed that Indians would benefit from assimilation as they wouldn’t be in poverty.
1956 Indian Vocational Training Act
Could be good or bad economically and socially.
Encouraged Native Americans in the US to leave Indian reservations and acquire vocational skills and assimilate into the general population.
1972 Indian Education Act
Good social
Gave Natives more control over their schooling as well as more funding.
Indian Self-Determination and Education Act 1975
Good in all ways
Act allowed for Indian tribes to have more autonomy and have the opportunity to assume the responsibility for programs and services administered to them on behalf of the Secretary of the Interior through contractual agreements.
1978 Education Amendments Act
Good social.
A complete overhaul for NA education.
-Improved quality
-Gave Indian communities more control over their education programs
-Addressing the educational needs of students from diverse backgrounds
-Increased aid to private schools
-Helped to desegregate school systems
1978 Native American Religious Freedom Act
Good social
Protected and preserved the religious rights and culture of NAs.
Allowed protection of religious practices in law, protection of sacred seats, rights to religious freedom, use of peyote and other religious objects without persecution.
1990 Native American Graves Protection Act
Good social
Act that attempted to protect ancient burial sites of NAs. Further push for tribal rights.
