What were Presidents attitudes to women’s rights up to Theodore Roosevelt in 1901?
Woman’s suffrage was gaining momentum but presidents did not actually actually address or improve the situation for women.
What was T. Roosevelt (1901-09) position on women?
He was a noted progressive reformer but wasn’t an outspoken suffragist. BUT, his progressive ethos did encourage debates on equality and rights.
How did Herbert Hoover in the Great Depression stand on women?
Women weren’t a significant focus of his administration.
How did Woodrow Wilson 1913-21 stand on women rights?
He was initially reluctant on women’s rights but eventually supported the 19th Amendment in 1920.
How did Franklin D Roosevelt 1933 - 45 stand on women’s rights?
New Deal expanded government programs that benefitted many Americans including women. However, his agenda didn’t specifically target gender equality.
How did Truman (1945-53) improve women’s rights?
Desegregated armed forces and appointed women to government roles - but his record on explicit women’s rights legislation was limited.
How did Lyndon B Johnson 1963-69 affect women’s rights?
He pushed for anti-discriminatory measures in employment and this directly women’s rights. He signed Equal Pay Act of 1963.
How did Reagan (1981 - 89) affect women’s rights?
He scrapped some social programs that helped women and had a lower proportion of women in top governmental positions compared to previous eras.
