Q

List and define the features of the Freudian Viewpoint to consciousness

A

*Conscious Mind: We are aware of thoughts and perceptions (eg. im in a lecture at uwa)

*Preconscious: Easily recalled mental events (eg. where were you born?)

Unconscious: Events that don’t get brought into conscious awareness (eg. how long did it take you to drink your coffee last saturday)

Q

list and define the two types of processing in a Cognitive Viewpoint

A

Controlled Processing: Conscious and effortful attention needed to complete a task

Automatic Processing: No conscious awareness or effort needed to complete a task

Q

How can we measure Consciousness?

A

Self-Report Measures: Questionnaires

Behavioural Measures: React to different stimuli in experiment

Physiological: Electrogastrophogy

Q

What is blindsight?

A

Reported blindness in part of the visual field, but when tested will still respond to stimuli if enough information is being received

Q

What is Hemispatial Neglect?

A

Occurs when there has been damage to one hemisphere, leading to a struggle in recognising one side of the visual field

Q

Why is it hard to measure Consciousness?

A

Because consciousness can very between:
Comas
Vegetative State
Minimally Conscious State
Locked-in Syndrome

Q

What is the Blood-Brain Barrier?

A

A lining of tightly packed cells that lets nutrients pass so neurons can function

13
Q

How does the Blood-Brain Barrier correlate to drugs and consciousness?

A

Capillaries can carry drugs through this barrier, which can then lead to an inhibition in synaptic transmission

Q

What are the two types of drugs and how do they influence neurotransmitters

Q

How do Depressants influence consciousness?

A

*Decreases nervous system activity
*In moderate amounts it reduces anxiety and produces euphoria

16
Q

What is Alcohol Myopia?

A

Short sighted thinking due to inability to pay attention to information

17
Q

How is Alcohol a depressant? List other depressant types.

A

*Alcohol impairs reaction time, coordination and decision making as it’s content increases

*Barbiturates and Tranquillisers:
Sleeping tablets and Valium

18
Q

How do Stimulants influence consciousness?

A

Stimulants arouse the neural system, increasing blood pressure, heart rate and overall alertness

e.g. Caffeine

19
Q

List different types of powerful stimulants and their general effect

A

Amphetamines, Cocaine, Ecstasy: Boosts energy and mood

20
Q

What are Opiates?

A

Drugs that provide pain relief and mood changes

21
Q

List the different types of Opiates

A

Opium, morphine, codeine, heroin

22
Q

What are Hallucinogens?

A

Drugs that distort our sensory
They very in affects on the neurotransmitter

23
Q

List the different types of Hallucinogens

A

LSD and Magic mushrooms

24
Q

What is the active ingredient of Marijuana, how does it effect Consciousness

A

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) creates euphoria, relaxation and enhanced sensory experiences

25
What is the difference between drug Tolerance and Withdrawal?
Tolerance suggests that as drugs are used repeatedly, the intensity of their effects decrease Withdrawal involves an individual continuing to take a drug after the use stops as a result of compensatory responses (reactions opposite to the drug)
26
List the different factors that differentiates a drugs effect on seperate people
Biological factors Psychological factors Environmental factors
