What was the role of the court?
Was used as a place where the nobility could counsel and therefore influence the king with their ideas
What was the privy chamber?
A private set of rooms with only select members of staff- for kings privacy
What did the kings council do?
They advised the king over matters of state and acted on his behalf
What was the council in the star chamber?
A new law court established to control nobility
What was the council learned in law and how many members did it have?
Used to deal with the kings finances by collecting bonds and recognisances and included 1500 members who met daily
How did the church help keep Henry in control?
Made people obedient across the country
What was the role of local govt?
Henry relied on them to maintain law and order in different areas

Justices of the peace- maintained public order and made new laws on behalf of king- 18 per county

We’re responsible for the justice system in north

-So Henry could rule more directly in wales- poverty made people steal cattle and it was easy to evade punishment

-To bring more rebellious areas of Ireland under control
-appointed his son Henry as lord lieutenant

An Irish parliament could be summoned and pass laws but only with kings approval- gave Henry more control

-was dependant on good will of local officials
-Henry’s only control over them was the threat of removal

-had to get loans to pay for his coronation, wedding and progresses
-at St George’s day feast there wasn’t enough money to pay for it

-achieve financial stability by increasing royal income

Henry’s private part of his castle where only a select number of men were allowed

Money collected for emergencies only such as war- not very often

A forced loan without any repayment- eg in 1491 Henry raised £48.5k to take his army to France

To improve his security and make him look like a powerful monarch
