1
Q

What does the term buildability mean?

A

It is a term used by the engineering and construction teams to describe how easy it is to build the design. The use of PCSA and ECI agreements helps with getting definition and understanding of this.

Q

What is a cofferdam and how is it constructed?

A

A temporary dry working area is created within a water body to facilitate construction activities. This is achieved by driving steel sheet piles into the ground and reinforcing them with props and supports to maintain structural integrity. Once secured, the water is pumped out, leaving a dry and safe environment for construction without the risk of flooding.

It is used typically for the creation of flood defences, bridges and dams.

Q

What is a barge platform?

A

A floating platform use to construct from water. Works from there is constrained based on the tide and should only be considered when working from land is not possible.

16
Q

Name some shallow foundations?

A

Raft, strip and pad foundations

17
Q

Name some deep foundations?

A

Pile foundations

18
Q

What is a Raft Foundation?

A

A uniform reinforced slab of uniform thickness is spread across the entire area of the building’s footprint. It should only be used in low bearing capacity soils and individual column loads.

19
Q

Name some raft foundations?

A
  • Cellular raft
  • Solid raft
  • Piled raft
20
Q

What is a pad foundation?

A

This type of foundation is typically used to transmit loads from columns (either RC or steel) where the area of the pad is slightly larger than the structural column.

21
Q

What is a strip foundation?

A

A type of foundation that supports structural walls by excavating a trench and filling it with RC and to transmit the linear loads safely.

22
Q

What are piling foundations?

A

The insertion of RC columns into the ground to transmit loads to a lower level. These foundations are used when heavy loads need to be transferred and/ or ground conditions are poor and hard strata needs to be found and used.

23
Q

What are the main types of piling foundations?

A

Displacement and Non-Displacement Piles

24
Q

What are displacement piles?

A

Piles which are driven in to the ground causing the soil around it to be displaced

25
What are non-displacement piles?
Piles which are inserted only after removing the earth beneath it
26
What are some of the displacement piles you are aware of?
- Driven steel sheet piles - Steel tube piles filled with concrete - Pre-cast concrete piles
27
Name some types of non-displacement piles?
- Bored piles - Secant piles - Pali Radice (root piling)
28
What is underpinning?
The process of rehabilitating a foundation via shoring/ propping the above wall and poring/ grouting concrete to increase the foundation strength.
29
What are the benefits and limitations of displacement piles?
This method is faster to install and eliminates the need to manage excavated soil, as no earth is removed. However, it can be quite noisy, and driving the piles may take longer if hard ground or obstructions are encountered.
30
What are Modern Methods of Construction (MMC)?
The offsite factory manufacture, assembly and testing of building structures which are then brough to site for installation and final T&C.
31
What are the benefits of using MMC?
- Speed of construction - Reduces the length of time required on site - Safer than constructing on site
32
What are some of the common uses of MMC which you are aware of?
- Relocatable Equipment Buildings (REB) - Pre-fab buildings - Site Accommodations
