What is Sustainability?
The process of meeting our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs from an environmental, social, and economic perspective.
What are the typical sustainability issues faced on a construction project?
Social - Taking on apprentices, local employment, and leaving a long standing legacy for local communities.
Environmental - Sound/ waste pollution, fumes from plant/ equipment, hazardous substances, waste products, recycling materials, low emission machinery and plant and archaeological items.
Economic - Creation of local employment, contributing to the GDP, and nation’s economy.
Name some regulations or codes of practices related to sustainability.
UK : - Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) of the Building Regulations
KSA : - Saudi Building Code and Mostadam
Codes of practices: Building Research Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) and BREEAM Infrastructure (formerly known CEEQUAL)
What are the grading classifications for BREEAM, BREEAM Infrastructure (CEEQUAL) and Mostadam?
BREEAM and BREEAM Infrastructure have gradings such as: Pass, Good, Very Good and Excellent.
Mostadam has the grading system of Green, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond.
