How many coc pills do you need to take to be protected?
If you start on the 1st of your period you are protected straight away, otherwise, wait 7 pills
What is the most effective way to take the coc pill?
Never have a period and constantly use hormonal pills
What happens if you miss one pill? Two pills?
One pill-take it as soon as you realise and do nothing
2 pills-you are not covered until you’ve taken 7 consecutive pills
How does cocp prevent pregnancy?
Prevents ovulation
What are the contradictions for using cocp?
BMI>30 Smoker Factor V Leiden Breast feeding Immobility Family history of DVT Migraine with aura
What are the side effects of cocp?
Irregular bleeding
Breast tenderness
Nausea
How does cocp affect cancer?
Increases risk for cervical
Protective for ovarian and endometrial
What is the mechanism of pop?
Thickens cervical mucus so sperm cannot penetrate
if high enough dose-can also prevent ovulation
What are the contraindications of pop?
Pregnancy
Recent breast cancer
What should a woman do if she misses one pop?
Wait 2 days before she is protected
What are the contraindications of copper IUD?
Chlamydia and or gonorrhoea and wilson’s disease. Always do a pelvic exam first
How does the copper IUD work as an emergency contraceptive?
It can be inserted up to 5 days after ovulation (ECP has to be before)
Fertilised eggs take approx 7 days to move along the fallopian tubes and implant.
