What makes hyperemesis gravidarum different from normal morning sickness?

A

HG: Perisitent, interferes with fluid intake, volume depletion, electrolyte imbalance, ketosis, >5% weight loss
Normal morning sickness: vomiting <3 times per day

How do we treat hyperemesis gravidarum?

A
  1. Correct electrolyte abnormality: IV 0.9% saline plus K
  2. Prophylaxis against complications: folic acid, thiamine, pyridoxine
  3. Anti nausea medication
    - Metroclopramide
    - Cyclazine
    - Ondansetron
