What do you examine on the baby’s head?
Head circumference Fontanelles Conjunctivitis Epicanthic folds Red reflex (congenital cataracts) Inspect the pinna Check full palate
What do you examine on the baby’s neck?
Length (short in Turner's syndrome) Clavicle fracture (shoulder dystocia)
What do you check in the baby’s limbs?
Fingers and toes
Palmer creases
Brachial and femoral pulses
Barlow’s test
Describe barlow’s test
Adduct the hip and apply pressure on the knees, directing the force positively- a positive test is the feeling that the hip has dislocated posteriorly.
This is tested with ortolani test which relocates the dislocated hip.
What do you examine in the chest?
Deformaties Any signs of respiratory distress Normal newborn resp rate 30-60 Auscultate the lungs Auscultate the heart Should be 120-150 bpm
What do you assess in the abdomen?
Distension
Hernia
Umbilicus
Anus
What do you check for in the genitalia?
Male-undescended testes Hydroceles Position of meatus Female-fusion of labia size of clitoris
What do you look for in the back?
Scoliosis
Abnormal skin changes
Tufts of hair
Which reflexes are checked?
Palmar grasp Sucking reflex Rooting reflex Stepping reflex Moro reflex
