Controlling blood glucose Flashcards
(21 cards)
What effect does eating food containing carbohydrates have on glucose levels ?
It puts glucose into the blood from the gut
What effect does the normal metabolism of cells have on glucose levels ?
They remove glucose from the blood
What effect does vigorous exercise have on glucose
levels ?
It removes much
more glucose from the blood
Where can excess glucose be stored in the body ?
It can be stored as glycogen in the liver and in the muscles
The level of glucose in the blood must be kept steady. What are the changes monitored and controlled by ?
The pancreas
How does the pancreas monitor and control level of glucose ?
By using hormones insulin and glucagon, in a negative feedback cycle
What is added when blood
glucose levels are too high ?
Insulin
What is added when blood glucose levels are too low ?
Glucagon
What is diabetes ?
A conditions that affects your ability to control your blood sugar level
What happens in Type 1 diabetes ?
The pancreas produces little or no insulin.
What is the effect of the pancreas producing little or no insulin ?
Blood glucose levels can rise to a level to kill
People which Type 1 diabetes need insulin therapy. What is it ?
It usually inclines several injections of insulin throughout the day, most likely at meal times
How does insulting therapy help ?
It makes sure that glucose is removed from the blood quickly once the food has been digested, stopping the level getting to high. (It is a very effective treatment)
What does the amount of including that needs to be injected depend on ?
The person’s diet and how active they are
What else do people with type 1 diabetes have to think about ?
Limiting the intake of food rich in simple carbohydrates
Taking regular exercise
Why must people
with type
1 diabetes think about limiting the intake of food rich in Simple Carbohydrates?
Foods like sugars cause the blood glucose to rise rapidly
Why must people with
type 1 diabetes think about regular excercise ?
It helps to remove excess glucose from the blood
What is Type 2 diabetes ?
Where a person becomes resistant to their own insulin (they still produce insulin, but their body’s cells don’t respond or to the hormone)
What does Type 2 diabetes cause ?
A person’s blood sugar level to rise to a dangerous level
What can increase your chance of getting Type 2 diabetes ?
Being overweight can increase your change of developing Type 2 diabetes, as obesity is a major risk factor in the development of the disease.
How can Type 2 diabetes be controlled ?
By wasting a carbohydrate-controlled diet and getting regular exercise
