Core 1 - The Nervous System Flashcards
(14 cards)
Stimulus
A change in your environment which you may need to react to
List the 5 sense organs
Eyes Ears Tongue Nose Skin
Receptors
Group of cells which are sensitive to a stimulus (they change stimulus energy into electrical impulses)
Receptors in the eye
Sensitive to light
Receptors in the ears
Sensitive to sound and changes in position and enables us to keep our balance
Receptors in the tongue + nose
Sensitive to chemicals and enable us to taste and smell
Receptors in the skin
Sensitive to touch, pressure, pain and temperature changes.
Sensory Neurone
Nerve cells that carry electrical impulses from the receptors to the sense organs to the central nervous system
Relay Neurone
Nerve cells that carry signals from sensory neurones to motor neurones
Motor Neurone
Nerve cells that carry signals from the central nervous system to the effector
Effectors
Muscles - responds by contacting
Glands - responds by releasing chemical substances
Light receptor cells have what (like animal cells) ?
A nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane
Synapse
A gap between two neurones at which Signals cross this gap using chemicals released by a neurone
Central nervous system
Where info from the sense organs are sent and where reflexes and actions are coordinated. It consists of the brain and spinal cord only.
