CP13 Method

A
  1. Place ice in funnel and allow ice to warm up to 0°
  2. Determine mass of empty and dry beaker
  3. Put approximately 100cm³ of water in beaker and determine mass of beaker with water. Measure temp of water
  4. Add 20g of ice at 0°. Stir till ice melts
  5. Record lowest temp reached by ice and water mixture. Occurs when all ice melts
  6. Determine mass of the beaker; plus ice and water

Why do you need to crush ice in funnel?

A

So water escapes the funnel; only crushed ice will be put into water

Assess use of temperature sensor and data logger over thermometer.

A
  • Prevents parallax error in measuring temp
  • Dataloggers more useful when data varies over a short period of time
  • Dataloggers useful when a number of quantities are being measure simultaneously
  • Takes longer for thermometer to respond than sensors
