1
Q

Mechanoreceptors

A

receptors in ear that detect sound stimuli and movement of the head

2
Q

Pinnae

A

part of outer ear; made up of cartilage; collects sound waves and directs it to the auditory canal

3
Q

Auditory canal

A

curved tube that transmits sound waves from the pinnae to the tympanic membrane

4
Q

Tympanic membrane

A

ear drum; thin membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear; converts sound waves to vibrations

5
Q

Ossicles

A

smallest bones in the middle ear; malleus+ incus+ stapes; amplify and transmit vibrations from middle ear to inner ear

6
Q

Oval window

A

membrane covering the opening between middle ear and inner ear; transmits vibrations from middle ear to inner ear

7
Q

Round window

A

membrane covering that absorbs pressure waves moving into perilymph

8
Q

Eustachian tube

A

tube that connects the middle ear to the throat; equalises pressure on either side of tympanic membrane

9
Q

perilymph

A

fluid surrounding the bony labyrinth in inner ear

10
Q

Endolymph

A

fluid inside the membranes

11
Q

Vestibular apparatus

A

part of inner ear made up of semi-circular canals + utriculus + sacculus

12
Q

Cochlea

A

coiled tube in inner ear; contains hearing receptors(organ of corti)

13
Q

Auditory nerve

A

conduct nerve impulses to brain

14
Q

Otis media

A

middle ear infection; resulting in accumulation of fluid in middle ear; characterised by ear ache and leads to impaired hearing

15
Q

Serumen

A

wax-like substance produced in auditory canal; protect ear against dust and foreign objects.

16
Q

Maculae

A

receptors found in the utriculus and sacculus that detect changes in position of head w.r.t gravity (balance)

17
Q

Cristae

A

receptors found in the ampulla that detect changes in the direction and speed of movement.
