Correlations And Distributions Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is a correlation?
A relationship between two variables
What numbers is a correlation coefficient between?
-1 and + 1
What does a correlation coefficient show?
How closely the variables are linked
The type of correlation (positive or negative)
What does zero correlation mean?
The two variables aren’t linked at all
What is the difference between a negative correlation and zero correlation?
In a negative correlation one variable rises and the other one falls
In zero correlation, the results are random
Name an advantage of correlational research
You don’t have to control any variables
Good for analysing data rather than doing experiments
Name a disadvantage of correlational research
You can’t establish causing affect relationship relationships
What does a normal distribution curve look like?
It is symmetrical around the mean
What does a skewed distribution graph look like?
A wonky bell shape
What are the main median and mode like in a normal distribution?
They are all the same
What does a positive skew distribution graph look like?
The curve has a tail on the right side
What does a negative skew distribution curve look like?
It has a tail on the left side
What is the order of median mode and mean in a positive skew?
Mode, median mean
What is the order of mean median mode in a negative skew distribution curve?
Mode median mean
Is this a positive or negative skew?
Mode < median < mean
Positive
Is this a positive or a negative skew?
Mode > median > mean
Negative
