Covalent bonding Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are covalent bonding?
Two or more elements sharing electrons to obtain a full outer shell between non metals
What are covalent compounds mainly made up of?
gases, or liquids at room temperature.
Also non metals
The general properties?
- Brittle
- Bad conductors of heat and electricity
dull - Low melting and boiling point
- May be solid, liquid or gas
soft
What is the octet rule?
The tendency to achieve eight outer shell electrons
Discrete atoms meaning?
Atoms that do not share electrons
Diatomic molecules meaning
Made up of identical atoms held together by covalent bonds
Meaning of Molecular compound
formed when two or more non-metallic atoms join using covalent bonds
What are lone pairs?
Electrons that do not participate in bonding
What are bonding pairs?
Electrons shared with another atom to create a bond
What is the difference between the octet rule and covalent bonding?
- The Octet Rule is a guiding principle in chemistry that suggests atoms tend to form bonds in a way that allows them to have eight electrons in their outer shell, achieving a stable electron configuration
- Covalent Bonding refers to the way atoms share electrons to form molecules
What is electronegativity?
is a measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons
