cp 13 effect of temp on the hatching success of brine shrimp Flashcards

does and and how much does or doesnt temp effect success of brine shrimp hatching
how does temp affect the hatching of brine shrimp
most shrimp have an optimal temperature at which they hatch
usually 25-30 deg
hatching success rate should increase with increasing temp until the optimum temp, at which the success rate shoul decrease
control variable
sample at 25 degrees (represents room temp)
amount of sea salt used (seasalt used as brine shrip usually live in water with high salinity)
vol water used-100cm3 (dechlorinated water used because chlorine is toxic to brine shrimp)
number of brine shrimp eggs (roughly 40)
light intensity, all beakers placed in same area with same exposure to light
time, each sample of shrimp will be left for exactly 24 hrs
ethical concerns
shrimp cant consent to being used
try to minimise amount of suffering by considering animal welfare, release back into wild after use, store shrimp in conditions that replicate their natural habitat (sea salt, dechlorinated water), not using excessive temperature
,turn off bright light when not in use, work at a fast pace to minimise time shrimp are under any possible stress
thought that shrimp arent complex enough to suffer any mental or physical stress
how to count the hatched larvae
-place bright light near beaker, any larvae will swim towards the light
-using a fine glass pipette catch the shrimps and place them in a small beaker of salt water, taking care when handling
-record number of larvae that have successfully hatched at each temp
-record and plot a graph
