what are norms
Specific rules or socially acceptable standards, they can be unwritten rules or law.
what is deviance
Deviance is the act of violating a social norm , all crime is deviant but not all deviance is criminal.
what are moral codes ?
Basic rules, values and principles held by an individual, group, society. Police and teachers for example they could lose their job if they do not meet their codes
what are Formal sanctions?
Punishments for breaking explicit rules or laws
what are informal sanctions?
When unspoken rules are broken - naughty step etc
What is social control?
the way in which society controls our behaviour to conform to morals and values

Actus Reus - guilty act
Mens rea - Guilty Mind
You need both for an act to be criminal
Define Summary offence and Indictable offence
SUM - Speeding, Shoplifting - handled in magistrate court
INDICT - Rape, Murder - Crown Courts
Describe Custodial Sentences ?
Given for serious offences and end in imprisonment. Sentence can vary from days to life in prison
describe community sentences
Served in the community rather than jail, probation, curfew, AA meetings etc
Describe fines as a form of sanction
The size of the fine depends on the seriousness of the crime - may be allowed to pay installments
Describe discharge as a sanction
An ‘absolute discharge’ means a person is technically found guilty of an offence but there is no consequence. This is not considered a conviction. A ‘conditional discharge’ means that the offender must not commit further offences in a given period, but if they do, they will receive a more severe sentence.
