cross cultural research Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is cross cultural research?
psychologists compare behaviours in different cultures
- culture refers to the different beliefs and norms shared by a group of people. they are learned through interaction with other groupd members
how does child rearing differ between cultures?
child rearing practices vary across different cultures
e.g. in some cultures babies are cared for by many relatives whereas in others a baby spends more time with the mother alone whereas in others babies remain physically very close to their mother
what is a longitudinal study?
any study that takes place over months and years so that the effects of time
what are meta-analysis?
the results of several studies that have adressed similar aims combined
- statistical methods are used to produce an effect size to express overall trends
how does daycare contribute to the nature-nurture debate?
ainsworth suggests a strong association between sensitive, responsive parenting and a secure attachment style
- cross cultural research seems to suggest that children are insecurely attached due to the lack of maternal sensitive responsiveness.
- beliefs and values concerning childcare practices within a culture or subculture affect the way a child responds within a strange situation.
what is a strength of longitudinal studies?
ppt variables are controlled because a repeated measures design is used - the same person is studied overtime
- therefore, we can see the long term impact of privation/deprivatoin on an individual
what is a weakness of longitudinal studies?
when research takes place over time some ppts may no longer be available
- attrition
some people may be more likely to drop out than others which means the sample is biased
what is a strength of cross cultural research?
psych research has been largely collected by the western world
- our knowledge of attachment may therefore be biased
- ccs in different cultures provides contrasting info which seeks to address this imbalance
what is a weakness of cross cultural research?
ppts variables are not controlled the way they are in longitudinal studies
what is a strength of meta analysis
a meta-analysis is a useful way to increase the validity of conclusions by increasing the sample size
- selection of samples includes a range of age, gender and cultures
what is a weakness of meta analysis?
the decision about which studies to include or exclude may abe affected by selection bias
