cultural capital - external Flashcards
(8 cards)
what does Bourdieu argue?
both cultural and material factors contribute to educational achievement and are not separate.
what does ‘capital’ refer to?
typically refers to wealth
what are the other two types of capital Bourdieu found?
cultural capital and educational capital
cultural capital
refers to the knowledge, attitudes and values and language of the middle class.
gives an advantage to those who possess it - they are more likely to develop intellectual interest and an understanding of what the educational system requires for success.
why do working class students fail due to cultural capital?
the education system transmits and favours middle-class culture
working class children feel that school devalues their culture as inferior.
they get the message that education is not for them and respond by truanting, leaving early or not trying.
educational and economic capital
wealthier parents can afford to send their children to private schools and paying for extra tuition.
what did Leech and Campos find?
study of Coventry:
middle-class parents are likely to be able to afford a house in the catchment area of a good school
this drives up the prices of houses near successful schools and excludes working class families
what did Sullivan find?
survey of 465 pupils:
those who read complex fiction and watched serious documentaries developed wider vocabulary.
these pupils tended to be middle-class and were children of graduates
