- Peptone
- Beef/meat extract
- Yeast extract
- Casein hydrolysate
- Agar
- pH of the medium
Has a known quality of all ingredients like carbon source (glucose or glycerol)
Defined medium
Has different complex ingredients in unknown quantities
Undefined medium
Other than basal media
Has added ingredients to bring the characteristics of microorganisms with unique nutrients
Complex media
For the isolation of bacteria as a pure culture on a solid medium
Growth of bacteria appear as smooth, rough, mucoid, round, irregular, filamentous and punctiform
Solid Medium
It shows the motility of bacteria and the cultivation of microaerophilic bacteria
Bacteria appear as thick line in the medium
Semi-Solid medium
It shows the growth of a large number of bacteria
Called broth that allows bacteria to grow uniformly with turbidity
Liquid media
Enhances the growth of many microorganisms
Also known as general-purpose media and considered non-selective media
Basal media
Allows the growth of devised microorganisms but inhibits other and fastidious microbes grow as they require nutrients
Requires the addition of other substances like blood, egg, or serum
Enriched media
Allows the growth of certain microbes of desired minor organisms and inhibits the growth of unwanted microbes
Selective media
It is a liquid medium which also permits the growth of desired bacteria at a low density
Enrichment media
Shows visible changes due to the presence of an indicator like dyes or metabolic substances in the medium
Allows the growth of more than one microorganisms
Indicator or Differential media
Useful for clinical specimens and it act as temporary storage
Transport media
It maintains the longevity of bacterial culture
