Which parts of the body must we inspect for a CVS exam?

Hand
Arms

What can cause splinter haemorrhages in nails?

Trauma

What is clubbing a sign of?

Chronic hypoxia

What things do we check the hands for?

Cyanosis

What is the character of an artery?

The speed at which it expands and collapses and the force with which it does it

Define low BP

Less than 100/60

Define high BP

Higher than 140/90

How do we check JVP?

Patient supported at 45 degrees
Head turned away from you, neck muscles relaxed
Look for pulsation along line of IJV
Should not extend more than 3cm above sternal angle

Why do we check dentition?

Because this is a pathway by which bacteria can get into the heart and cause infective endocarditis

What is mitral facies?

The face of someone with mitral stenosis
Rosy cheeks whilst rest of face is cyanosed

Where do we feel for the apex beat?

5th ICS
Mid clavicular line

How do we feel for heaves?

Left sternal edge, use ball of hand to push down
Does something push back? If so then there is right ventricle or left atrial enlargement

What are thrills?

Palpable murmurs
(Feel over the areas you would listen for each murmur)

Inspect sacrum for signs of oedema
Insect feet and legs for signs of oedema
Check foot pulses
