1
Q

what is the circulatory system?

A

organ system transporting O2, CO2, nutrients etc.

2
Q

what is the cardiovascular system?

A

heart
bv
blood
lymphatic system

3
Q

what is the pulmonary circulation?

A

O2 depleted blood
passes from heart to lungs
returns oxygenated blood to heart

4
Q

what is the systemic circulation?

A

O2 rich blood
passes from heart to rest of body
returns deoxygenated blood to heart

5
Q

what are the layers of the heart?

A
fibrous layer
parietal pericardium
pericardial cavity
visceral pericardium
myocardium
endocardium
6
Q

what are chordae tendinae?

A

heart strings
connected to papillary muscles
-keeps blood going right way

7
Q

what are septal defects?

A
interventricular/interatrial septum
hole in the heart
atrial septal defect
ventricular septal defect
atrioventricular septal defect
8
Q

what is ASD?

A

incomplete closure of foramen ovale

larger defects result in hypertrophy of the RA & RV

9
Q

what is infective endocarditis?

A

usually subacute bacterial
endocarditis
occurs on rheumatic or congenitally abnormal valves
can affect prosthetic valves
many organisms
can be result of dental abscess
murmur can be present due to valvular vegetations

10
Q

what is coronary artery disease?

A
coronary arteries are end arteries
ischaemia
-results in collateral circulation developing
angina pectoris
infarction=anterior IV branch of LCA
RCA
circumflex branch of LCA
11
Q

what is atrial fibrillation? (AF)

A

rapid, irregular contraction of dif parts of the atria

12
Q

what is ventricular fibrillation? (VF)

A

rapid, irregular contraction of V
not compatible with systemic and coronary circulation
most disorganised form of dysrhythmia-cardiac arrest

13
Q

describe the arterial system

A

role=distribution
systole causes expansion of arterial walls
recoild maintains arterial blood pressure during diastole
dlow regulated by varying diameter of capillaries
3 histological layers:
tunica intima
tunica media
tunica adventitia

14
Q

which arteries are elastic?

A

aorta, common carotid, subclavian, pulmonary

15
Q

which arteries are muscular?

A

radial, femoral, coronary, cerebral

16
Q

which are arterioles?

A

terminal branches supplying capillary bed
