Cycles Flashcards
(24 cards)
Why must chemical elements be recycled?
law of conservation of mass. They can not be created nor destroyed only transformed.
What processes are involved in Carbon-Hydrogen-Oxygen cycles
Photosynthesis, cellular respiration, decomposition, combustion, and geological processes.
Why are bean plants rotated on farms?
Because they hold nitrogen fixing bacteria, meaning they add nitrogen to the soil, so they are rotated with other crops that need nitrogen.
Decomposers break down nitrogen compounds and release…
Nitrogen gas
What is the role of bacteria in the nitrogen cycle?
Convert nitrogen in the soil to ammonia (NH3) so that plants can intake it.
What 2 life functions of animals help maintain the water cycle?
Respiration and excretion.
How is nitrogen in cells of plants and animals first released with help of what organisms?
Decomposers specifically bacteria and fungi.
What is the role of plants in the nitrogen cycle?
Absorbing the nitrogen from the soil to use to build for essential proteins and chlorophyll.
What are non-renewable resources?
Resources that are used faster than they are made like coal and oil
What are renewable resources?
can not be used up or can replenish themselves over time.
What is an ecological footprint?
the amount of land needed to support a person.
What is habitat fragmentation?
prevents an organism from accessing its entire home range
What are habitat corridors?
they allow species to move between areas in habitats like road overpasses or underpasses
What do invasive species often do?
Push out native species
What is the endagered species act?
it works to protect individual species from extinction.
What is photsynthesis
the process where plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar
What is cellular respiration
the process by which cells convert glucose into ATP, the cell’s primary energy currency.
What is the photosynthesis equation?
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂.
What is the cellular respiration equation?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
How is water used in plants?
It is absorbed through the roots and used in photosynthesis but is lost from their leaves through transpiration.
How does water return to the atmosphere?
Transpiration from leaves and evaporation from soil and other sources.
What does the amount of precipitation received by an area help determine?
What type of plants will grow there which in turn determines the types of animals that inhabitat a region.
How does water from the land enter the oceans?
Through seepage from the ground. Also from runoff from the surface
What causes evaporation from the ocean?
Solar Radiation
