The phosphorus cycle Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is the main reservoir of phosphorus
Rock and soil
When does Erosion occur?
As water rushes over rock, dissolving phosphorus and washing it into rivers.
What happens after erosion?
Phosphorus unites with oxygen to form phosphate and enters a major body of water.
What happens when the water gives up its phosphates
It is absorbed by the plants and used in the synthesis of organic Molecules.
How does the phosphorus cycle go
Phosphate is concentrated in plant tissues then the plant is consumed by an animal, then phosphates return to the lake when the plants and animals die through plant and animal waste, Then the the phosphate is reabsorbed by plants that line the lake and the cycle continues.
Is atmosphere involved in the Phosphorus cylcle
NOOOO
What is upthrust?
the process through which once-submerged sedimentary rock rich in phosphorus is exposed because of the movement of the Earth’s plates.
