ὁ Κῦρος ἤλαυνεν (was riding) ἐπὶ τὴν Βαβυλῶνα.
Cyrus was riding against Babylon,
οἱ δὲ Βαβυλώνιοι ἐκστρατευσάμεν (having marched out to battle) οι ἔμενον αὐτόν.
And the Babylonians, having marched out to battle, were waiting for him.
ἐπεὶ δὲ ἐγένετο (he came near) ἐλαύνων ἀγχοῦ τῆς πόλεως,
And when he, riding, came near the city,
(ἀγχοῦ + gen: near)
συνέβαλόν (they joined battle) τε οἱ Βαβυλώνιοι
the Babylonians joined battle
καὶ ἡττηθέντες (after being defeated) τῇ μάχῃ
and after being defeated in battle,
κατειλήθησαν (they were forced into) ἐς τὸ ἄστυ
They were forced into the city
ᾗ εἶχον σιτία (food) ἐτῶν κάρτα πολλῶν.
where they had provisions for very many years.
ἐνταῦθα οὗτοι μὲν λόγον εἶχον τῆς πολιορκίας οὐδένα (they considered of no importance)
Then, they considered the siege of no importance
Κῦρος δὲ ἀπορίαις ἐνείχετο (was at a loss).
and Cyrus was at a loss.
τέλος δὲ ἐποίει δὴ τοιόνδε (as follows).
Finally, he indeed was doing/did as follows.
τάξας (having drawn up- from τάσσω) τὴν στρατιὰν ᾗ ὁ ποταμὸς εἰς τὴν πόλιν εἰσβάλλει
Having drawn up his army where the river flows into the city
καὶ αὖθις ὄπισθε (+ gen) τῆς πόλεως (behind the city) τάξας ἑτέρους,
and having drawn up the rest in turn behind the city,
ᾗ ἐξίησιν (it goes out) [ἐκ] τῆς πόλεως ὁ ποταμός
where the river goes out of the city
προεῖπε (+ dat) τῷ στρατῷ, ὅταν (when they saw that [ἴδωσι]) διαβατὸν τὸ ῥεῖθρον ἴδωσι γενόμενον,
he ordered the army, when they saw that the channel became passable,
εἰσιέναι (to enter) ταύτῃ εἰς τὴν πόλιν.
To enter the city in this way.
οὕτω τε δὴ τάξας καὶ παραινέσας (having instructed)
And having indeed thus drawn (them) up and instructed (them)
ἀπήλαυνεν (he was riding off) αὐτὸς σὺν (+ dat.) τῷ ἀχρείῳ τοῦ στρατοῦ.
he himself was riding off with the non-combatant part of his army.
ἀφικόμενος (having arrived) δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν λίμνην, οὖσαν ἕλος
And having arrived at the lake, which was a marsh
τὸν ποταμὸν διώρυχι εἰσαγαγών (having diverted the river)
having diverted the river [into it] with a canal,
τὸ ἀρχαῖον ῥεῖθρον διαβατὸν εἶναι ἐποίησεν (made… [to be] passable)
He made the original channel passable
ὑπονοστήσαντος (when… had gone down) τοῦ ποταμοῦ
when the river had gone down.
γενομένου (with… having happened) δὲ τούτου τοιούτου
With something of this sort having happened
οἱ Πέρσαι οἵπερ τεταγμένοι ἦσαν ([they] had been drawn up) ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ τούτῳ (for this very purpose)
the Persians who had been drawn up for this very purpose
ὑπονενοστηκότος (when… had gone down) τοῦ Εὐφράτου ποταμοῦ,
