Cytokines Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a cytokine?
Small protein, signalling molecule
What is an autocrine action?
Sending intracellular signals using cytokines.
What is a paracrine action?
Cell signalling to adjacent cell using cytokines
What is endocrine action?
Signal from cell is passed through a transport system towards target cell(s)
What is the idea of pleiotropy?
Cytokine has different effect on different target cells.
What actions can be taken from cytokines?
Proliferation, activation etc
What do macrophages do when they sense microbial products?
Send variety of cytokines to initiate innate defence.
Can cytokines affect gene transcription through dimerization?
Yes, phosphorylated STATS are produced as a result and initiates transcription.
What is the main role of chemokines?
To attract specific cell types
Do cytokines require receptors to function?
Yes
